The N-3B jacket was introduced in the 1950s as part of the U.S. Air Force's cold-weather clothing system, specifically developed for personnel operating in Arctic and other extremely cold environments.

Unlike the MA-1 flight jacket commonly worn by pilots, the N-3B was primarily designed for ground crews. Its longer cut extends over the hips and upper thighs, providing greater insulation.
